How Much Caffeine Is 65mg? Coffee, Tea, and Energy Drinks Compared
You saw 65mg on a can and thought: is that a lot? A little? Should I be impressed or unimpressed? Fair question. Caffeine numbers mean nothing without context, so here's the context.
The short answer
65mg of caffeine is almost exactly one shot of espresso. It's about two thirds of a standard cup of drip coffee, a little more than a cup of black tea, and a little less than a small Red Bull. It's roughly a third of a can of Celsius.
In other words: 65mg is a real dose, not a decorative one. It's just not a sledgehammer.
The comparison table
These are typical figures. Actual caffeine varies with brew method, bean, leaf, and brand, so treat everything below as an approximation. (For the deep dive on doses, sources, and timing, see the Complete Guide to Natural Caffeine.)
| Drink | Serving | Caffeine (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Green tea | 8oz | About 28mg |
| Black tea | 8oz | About 47mg |
| Espresso | 1 shot | About 64mg |
| Josie | 12oz can | 65mg |
| Red Bull | 8.4oz can | About 80mg |
| Drip coffee | 8oz | About 95mg |
| Monster | 16oz can | About 160mg |
| Celsius | 12oz can | 200mg |
Notice the spread. From green tea to Celsius is a sevenfold difference. Two drinks can both be called an energy drink and have wildly different amounts of the one ingredient that actually provides the energy.
What 65mg actually feels like
General caffeine research is pretty consistent on the basics. Caffeine gets absorbed within about 30 to 60 minutes, alertness picks up as it blocks adenosine (the sleepy chemical) from docking in your brain, and the half-life runs around five to six hours for most adults.
That half-life number is the one people ignore. If you drink 200mg at 2pm, roughly 100mg is still in your system at 7 or 8pm. Start with 65mg instead and you're down to about 33mg by evening, which is less caffeine than a cup of green tea. Same afternoon lift, much smaller bedtime tax.
65mg won't make your hands shake. It won't make your heart do anything interesting. It's the amount of caffeine humans have been drinking in a strong cup of tea or a single espresso for a very long time.
Who a 65mg dose is right for
- Afternoon drinkers. The 2pm slump crowd. Enough lift to finish the day, small enough that sleep isn't a negotiation.
- Caffeine-sensitive people. If a large cold brew turns you into a nervous squirrel, 65mg is a civilized entry point.
- The second-drink-of-the-day people. Already had your morning coffee? Adding 65mg keeps your daily total reasonable. Coffee at 95mg plus a Josie is about 160mg, still well under the commonly cited 400mg daily guidance for healthy adults.
- Anyone tapering down. Going from 300mg a day to zero is miserable. Going from 300 to 160 to 65 is a plan.
Where Josie's 65mg comes from
Josie's caffeine is natural caffeine from green tea, not synthetic caffeine anhydrous. Green tea has a long history here. It's the same plant that gives you L-theanine, an amino acid commonly associated with a smoother, calmer kind of alertness, which we broke down in our post on L-theanine and green tea.
The rest of the can is short: carbonated water, Lion's Mane mushroom (traditionally used for focus), Cordyceps mushroom (traditionally used for endurance), vitamin B12, and natural flavors. Zero sugar, zero calories, zero artificial sweeteners. The full breakdown lives on our ingredients page, and if you want to go deeper on how the pieces fit together, the science page covers it.
One more practical note: Josie is a clear liquid. Coffee's tannins are what stain teeth over time. Sparkling water with green tea caffeine doesn't work that way, which matters if you're drinking your caffeine every single day.
FAQ
Is 65mg of caffeine a lot?
No. It's a moderate dose, about the same as one espresso shot and less than a standard cup of drip coffee. Commonly cited guidance for healthy adults is up to around 400mg per day, so 65mg is roughly a sixth of that.
How long does 65mg of caffeine last?
Research on caffeine generally suggests you feel the effects within 30 to 60 minutes, with a half-life of about five to six hours. So five hours after drinking 65mg, roughly half of it is still active. Most people find a 65mg afternoon dose clears well before bedtime.
Is 65mg of caffeine okay in the afternoon?
For most people, yes, and that's exactly the use case it suits best. Because the dose is moderate, the amount remaining by 10pm is small. If you're very caffeine sensitive, keep it before 3pm and see how you respond.
